Year founded: 2001

Number of residents:  12 per year

 Program length: 3 years

What does your program offer that residents can‘t get anywhere else?

We utilize a collaborative model with trauma surgery in which our residents share the responsibilities of leading traumas, resuscitating patients, and performing procedures. Our critical care experience is one of the best in the country. We have an incredibly sick patient population and catchment area, so we see the sickest of the sick on a daily basis. Residents develop early autonomy in the emergency department by leading pods and running resuscitations.

What is the work-life balance like?

We work eight-hour shifts on the weekdays and 12-hour shifts on the weekends. Time off is a major part of wellness, and our residents receive at least four weeks of vacation per year.

Our residents also participate in wellness activities as part of our mentorship group program. We do group check-ins and individual check-ins. Ultimately, we maintain a healthy work-life balance by listening to the needs of our residents and always being willing to change the things that need changing.

The Birmingham food scene is one of the most outstanding in the country. Between five-star restaurants, awesome sushi, great bars and pubs, and places to grab burgers with your co-residents post-shift, the options are limitless.
